I can't see the Webcam images

In order to view the images and animations on our Web site, you need to install the Flash Player 7. If you don't have the Flash Player 7 plug-in, click on the link to download it free of charge.

Can I put one of Tourisme Montréal's Webcam images on my own site?

Although we would prefer that you include a link to our site, you can use our images. Please send an e-mail to information@tourisme-montreal.org to let us know where our images will be posted.

How do I find out exactly what I'm seeing in the images? I'm curious about some of the streets and buildings.

Write us and we'll do our best to identify what is in the photograph, or we'll send you some Web links and other resources to answer your questions more fully. Fortunately, there are a lot of great books and sites about Montréal's rich commercial, cultural and architectural heritage. In addition to the city's many museums, there are also a variety of guided tours offered, so next time you're in town, be sure to take advantage.

Why don't we see any street scenes or close-ups of people in pictures of Montréal life?

Good question. In fact, this is probably the question we are asked most often. Recording and transmitting pictures of people without their expressed consent is actually a legal issue. Right now, there is great discussion about this, both in printed media, as well as in electronic media... including, of course, the Internet. We want to respect the current court ruling, and more importantly, respect each individual's right to privacy by not showing people close-up.

Would it be possible to see pictures projected from the surveillance cameras along the roads?

It is possible; it's just not the focus of MontréalCAM, which is to show places tourists will enjoy.

Good news, though: the Ministère des transports has traffic surveillance camera coverage, which you can access on their site. Here's the link... drive carefully!

I sent a postcard to a friend with an image I captured from the WebCam. When she viewed the postcard, it wasn't the same image. What happened?

Your friend likely visited her postcard more than a month after you sent it. If she had viewed her postcard within the first month, she would have seen the exact live image of Montréal you sent her. Our server only keeps images for a one-month period.

We've added a reminder when you create your postcard to tell you that the recipient must view the card before it expires. That way, your unique photo moments of Montréal can be enjoyed.

When is the best time to watch the cameras?

Anytime, day or night, winter or summer, our cameras are on. Ideally, you should try to explore the city with the WebCams both during the day and at night, for two different perspectives. Remember that it becomes dark in Montréal much earlier in winter - at around 4 p.m. - whereas in summer, daylight ends around 9 p.m.
